Creating a Vision Board & Setting New Year’s Goals

Vision board with images taped inside notebook with lined paper

This post is all about creating a vision board & setting New Year’s goals! I’ll tell you a little about mine and show you some ideas for tracking your progress all year long.

Setting New Year’s Goals

My biggest tip for setting goals for the New Year is to think of ways to build on who you are and what you want, rather than trying to change everything about yourself. The start of a new year is a great time to reevaluate your habits and your aspirations. However, I find that it helps to come at these changes from a positive perspective. It’s great to want to improve yourself, but don’t forget that you’re already great and worthy of being happy just as you are.

To set goals that you truly can and want to stick to, set goals that are important to YOU. That might seem obvious, but there are so many typical resolutions that people tend to set because they feel like that’s what they need to do. For instance, if spending time on social media brings you joy, don’t make it a goal to spend less time on it this year. Maybe instead your goal is to only spend time consuming content you enjoy, rather than unintentionally scrolling. Or maybe your goal has absolutely nothing to do with your screen time 🙂 Don’t let other people’s goals make you feel bad about what makes you happy.

Brainstorming & Defining

I started by creating a broad list of things I wanted to accomplish or work on in 2024. I used the goals I made for 2023 as a reference. Then I brainstormed a few things I wanted to keep working on as well as a few things I wanted to add on new for this year.

Once I had a broad list, I narrowed down my final goals. I chose a few that I thought I had the best chance of implementing simultaneously and that I could measure and define.

Speaking of a clear and measurable goal, I’m trying to hit 100 Etsy sales this year if you wanna browse 😉

That doesn’t mean I don’t want to keep the items left behind on the brainstorming list in mind all year. I just wanted to narrow down my list so I’m not trying to do too much at once. If I learn to embroider or I stay more organized even though those didn’t make the Definitive list, great! Ultimately those just weren’t the highest priorities to focus on all year long.

Don’t let other people’s goals make you feel bad about what makes you happy.

Creating a Vision Board

Creating a vision board is a fun way to visualize the year you want for yourself! I’m personally working on not taking crafts too seriously, so this was a fun exercise. You can make your vision board on a giant canvas and hang it where you can see it everyday. Or you can make it in a sketch book that you can carry around with you. Or you can put together a Pinterest board.

I made mine in the same notebook I used to write my list of goals. A friend and I made a fun craft night out of it! We got together and went through magazines and brainstormed together. I cut out a few quotes that resonated, and a few pictures that matched the intention behind my goals.

Stay tuned to see a couple of the goal trackers I created for my running and reading goals!
